The Oamaru River bounds this block to the northwest and the Mohaka River to the north; it includes the lower catchment of the Mangapapa Stream. The contour of the terrain is generally easy. There are Tussock flats along the Oamaru River and the Mangapapa Stream; these are fringed with a band of Manuka scrub that leads into Beech forest, which covers about 2/3 of the block.
The predominant large game animal is Sika Deer with the occasional Red Deer.
There is good access to the Fish the Mohaka River from the Mangapapa Stream confluence up river and the Oamaru and Kaipo Rivers. There are normally good numbers of Rainbow and Brown Trout, both fly and spinner fishing are allowed during the season (1st October to 30th June).

The Hut has several rooms including two bunkrooms and a lounge kitchen area. There is also a plywood bivvy with three mattresses provided on the banks of the Anaru Stream, about an hours walk from the main hut. We consider the Oamaru an ideal area for family groups.
